Breastmilk Popsicles for Teething Babies

As the weather heats up, and your little one starts teething, some moms rely on homemade popsicles made from breastmilk also known as Momsicles. Since the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends waiting to start solid food until your baby is 6 months old to lower the possibility of food allergies, Momsicles are perfect for babies who start teething earlier. Even when not teething, babies love them as a healthy treat.

How to Make Momsicles

To make Momsicles, use a small enough mold so they can fit in a mesh food or teething feeder. This allows small pieces of the frozen breastmilk to get through to prevent baby from choking on any larger chunks that may break off. Ice cube trays that make small cubes work well. When the breastmilk has frozen over, you can pop out the cubes and store them in a freezer bag so it's handy to grab one. Use freezer bags that are meant for breastmilk and label the bag so you'll know when it needs to be used by.

How to Store Momsicles

Practice the same rules for storing Momsicles as you would for handling frozen breastmilk. Use fresh milk to freeze and store the Momsicles. Store them in a regular freezer for three to six months, and a deep freezer for six to twelve months.

Flavored Momsicles

When your baby is a little older and on solid food, you can try making flavored Momsicles such as pear, banana, apple, or even squash or carrot flavors! Make fruit and vegetable flavors from foods that your baby has already experienced as a solid. Use baby food puree or steamed fruit or vegetables to make your own. Mix in with breastmilk and freeze!

Let your baby enjoy these frozen treats this summer!
