Many realize the health benefits of human milk for babies, but did you know that supporting lactation also contributes to a cleaner environment? Healthy Horizons Breastfeeding Centers and Corporate Lactation Services is creating a healthier world for all, with 2.5 million ounces of breast milk pumped in Healthy Horizons managed Lactation Rooms through April 2023 in workplaces across North America, offsetting a massive amount of carbon emissions.
Per the International Breastfeeding Journal published by Bio Med Central, each kilogram of milk formula generated creates 4 kilograms of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gas. By pumping milk at a Healthy Horizon Lactation Room, parents across North America are negating potential emissions.
The breast milk pumped in Healthy Horizons lactation rooms prevented 275,422Kg of carbon dioxide greenhouse gas from being emitted into the environment – roughly the same emissions as 31,000 gallons of gas! The savings is equivalent to the amount of CO2 sequestered by 4,500 tree seedlings grown for 10 years. Says Cassi Janakos, COO and Co-Founder of Healthy Horizons Corporate Lactation Services, “Healthy Horizons is committed to creating healthier, happier lives for families everywhere. In addition to ensuring proper care and privacy for pumping parents, we’re thrilled that the pumping taking place in our workplace lactation rooms is playing a role in a cleaner climate for all!”
Comprehensive Corporate Lactation Programs are not only great for the environment but have long been shown to be a good investment for employers. Healthy Horizons clients boast a 5:1 return on investment - a $5 savings for every $1 spent. With a Healthy Horizons supported Corporate Lactation Program in place, employee perception of their employer improves, new parent retention rates increase to 60%, and employee efficiency improves. As companies become more aware of their carbon footprint and environmental impact, green initiatives are on the rise. Investing in a Corporate Lactation Program is now being understood as a green initiative for many companies. Supporting new parents to opt for human milk for their babies is a great way to contribute to a cleaner climate while enjoying benefits like lower employee absenteeism and better employee satisfaction.
